Whilst I would definitely say "Siffer" over "Cypher" for the very reasons laid out (NASA, PIN etc), I have never used either pronunciation.

I have always said "Seefer" with the "i" being pronounced like double "ee". I think the difference between "Siffer" and "Seefer" is subtle but makes a big difference. Perhaps this is a more European pronunciation.

Short i fo shizzle...

I've always called shock wave files, "swiff" files. Since it utilizes flash, it makes sense to use the short i in this instance as well.

Even if Mike D opted to pronounce it as 'siffer', I would say ES EYE EFF ARE, after all he added 's' before IFR. 'cypher' sounds cool but let's keep things in perspective, sIFR has nothing to do with cryptography.

PS: I say 'FLICK ARE'

hahaha, what a great debate - i still argue with co-workers over the pronunciation of GIF.. . personally, i have said it 'siffer' since the first day i read about it a few years back and have been using (and saying it like that) ever since. since Shaun Inman himself linked to this article, i would love to know what he says (unless he just refers to it as 'my flash replacement'). cypher just sounds like i'm 14 and trying to sound cool.
